Off the Beaten Track : Calvert Cliffs State Park

Last visited 4/2023

Stayed at Wyndham National Harbor

What makes Calvert Cliffs cool? This is an area that has fossils that were laid down between 10-20 million years ago. You find 'em, you keep 'em. Many fossil imprints can be found along the shore (look for the dark brown colored rocks), but we only found one shark tooth. The downside is that you cannot park as close to the beach as we once did in the early 2000s, so be prepared for about a 2 mile hike from parking to the beach. I saw several people pulling carts behind them which would have been better than carrying all the stuff we took along if we would have had one. Also good for small kids after a long day at the water.

You also will be able to see some different habitats when walking the trails (there are over 5 of them). This was new for me as last time it was all grassy areas, but now is a wetlands. I am not sure if it's due to rising water levels, or if there was some nefarious beaver actions involved, but it shows just what a change in progress nature is.

Bring buckets, waders, sifters, etc. to dig for fossils

This was once just a wild flower grassy area

At the beach. Make sure you check low tide charts so that the beach is maximized, otherwise, there is little to walk on and a lot of people vying for good picnicking and fossiling sites. The beach extends (as you can see) for quite a while, but it is posted so that you cannot be in dangerous areas where the cliffs overhang the beach. There is also SCUBA diving tours where you can search in the waters

Keep an eye open for wildlife, like this baby turtle, that was found floundering in the bay and relocated to the swampy area with his friends. Bullfrogs, snakes, hawks of all kinds, gulls, and beavers just a few animals you may see. The water was cold when we were there, and there were some jelly fish in the water, so plan ahead.
