Off the Beaten Track: Solomon's Island

Last visited 4/2023

We stayed at Wyndham National Harbor

Solomon's Island is a pretty little back creek area off the Chesapeake Bay where a lot of water sports can be enjoyed. There are many small bed and breakfasts that can be rented here, but we just decided to visit for the afternoon after going to Calvert Cliffs State Park. There are a lot of cute little shops to visit, hometown restaurants with good food, and an Artsfest that we had visited many years ago with wonderful exhibitors.

Today, we just did a quick go around as it was hot and we were tired and hungry. We visited the Calvert Marine museum, which is a small, but well kept and very informative museum. Kids can enjoy a Please Touch area, find a fossil in their paleontology area, and families can rent paddle boats for a fun time on the water. Guided tours of the walking deck to look for animals and birds is free, but you must sign up for them ahead of time. Find more information here: https://www.calvertmarinemuseum.com

Drum Point Lighthouse is open with your ticket. I think that they said up to 11 people lived in this lighthouse at one time. Find more information here: https://www.calvertmarinemuseum.com/199/Drum-Point-Lighthouse

MerMAN, Dad, MerMAN!! (for those who are Zoolander fans)

Inside the museum are many types of animals found in the area including these river otters.

More jellies!!!

Crabby friend, or delightful dinner

Stewie is always up for a good picture

One of the fossils on display shows that of a soft bodied star fish. Fossils of star fish are hard to find

Another good one

Up close and personal to a star fish

A tank with small skates and rays shows just how disgusted they are with the world

If I fits...

Most of the stores were still closed in April because it's not high tourist season, but we did take a little walk along the water way showing the high bridge connecting the island to the mainland over the Patuxent River

Hot, tired and hungry, we wanted a nice seafood dinner. We were directed to a sit down restaurant across the bridge by someone, but found this roadside restaurant on our way. Capt. Leonard's is a nice little restaurant, clean, friendly and had great food!

Huge platters at decent prices for seafood. Neither of us could eat the whole plate, so we had a second meal for back at the room
