Off the beaten track Philadelphia: Hopewell Furnace

Last visited 8/23

Cost: Free

We are fans of national parks, so we decided to visit one that is not on the ordinary "to do" list.

Hopewell Furnace is about an hour from Valley Forge, and is easily do-able in the same day if you are early risers, like we are. Find more information here: https://www.nps.gov/hofu/index.htm

What a pretty little place! It showcases the "iron plantations" that were instrumental in building this country. Hopewell was instrumental between the years of 1771-1883, and you can view the large water wheel that was used to provide air to the furnace, tour the overseers house (check times!), and how the workers lived on the property. Check for live demonstration times and special events. This is a walking tour, so be prepared for a short hike to the location from the visitor center over uneven terrain.

Bring a picnic lunch as there are plenty of tables and grassy areas to sit and enjoy the afternoon.

The overseer's house is open select hours, but feel free to take a rest on the front porch rockers
We couldn't get into the house when we visited, but snooped through the windows

The old furnace. To the left, you can do hands on demos of how they would make the iron plates for stoves
